A Thirsty Horse
“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it
drink”. This is a rather famous idiom
that speaks to us about teaching and learning.
There are many many more. The
Buddhist say, “When the student is ready, the Master will appear”. Aristotle said, “Teaching is the highest form
of understanding”. “Every truth has four
corners: as a teacher I give you one corner, and it is for you to find the
other three”. Confucius and of course I could fill this page and several more
pages with more quotes on this subject.
But what of teaching and learning. I have heard compliments that I myself am a
good teacher, or that I should be teaching for a living. But in reality what can I teach you? There certainly is some truth in all of the
above quotes, but also, in truth, you know more than you are willing to admit,
or that others are willing to give you credit for.
It is my goal to lead the horse to water, and just by
looking at the pool, it will REMEMBER, and be able to walk away quenched. I will never teach you anything… in truth that
which you learn best, you teach yourself.
