Do you have integrity?
Would you know if you didn’t have it?
How do you know you have it?
Here’s what the dictionary says of integrity:
·
Noun – adherence
to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty
·
the state of being whole, entire, or
undiminished: to preserve the integrity of the empire.
·
a sound, unimpaired, or perfect condition: the integrity of a ship's hull.
Morals and honor. We
know about that. Socrates wrote; “The
greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be.” While I personally think that is selling the
human race short a bit, it is clear that most men and women that we recognize
as having great honor have been elevated to hero status. A hero is not a great man. A hero is nothing more than someone that
understood what wrong must be righted… and they did it. They have a sense of honor or in other words,
integrity.
But
the rest of integrity is more elusive, and can take a lifetime to learn let
alone accomplish. This ‘soundness’ and
‘wholeness’ is a more difficult concept to grasp. Jung called it “individuation” and Maslow called
it “Self actualization”. It’s been
called many things by many people. But
what most people call it is scary!
Because in order to be whole, we have to bring to the surface many
things that we put away a long time ago.
“Badness” that we never want to be a part of us again. The trick is this “badness” never goes away…
it lurks in our subconscious self waiting for the time to spring out. It is during those times that others will say
of you; “he has no honor” or “she has no concept of integrity”, and they would
be right. Jung has said, “I’d rather be
whole and good”, and there is great wisdom in that.
