Feelings; good or bad? I think that there are a lot of people that will say that feelings are both good and bad and there may even be a few that may say feelings are neither good nor bad, they just are. Well, in my opinion the good news is you would ALL be right. Feelings are neither good nor bad yet they reflect those experiences we would label "good" or "bad".
The question is, how much should we listen to our feelings? Right or wrong, that is where it starts getting tricky. Feelings are the language of the heart, or if taken in the context of mind, body, spirit – feelings are the language of the spirit or soul. So generally speaking our feelings reflect that of a higher road. But we all know that is not always the case. How often do our feelings get in the way? For some quite often.
If living this higher road, if listening and making choices with your feelings works for you, then by all means continue doing so. If, however, following the higher road as not always brought to you what you were looking for, then maybe you should consider a different way.
Here is how I look at it (some of you may have heard this before, it’s in my book). I compare us to one of the ancient sailing ships sailing trying to navigate the ocean of life. The wind that fills our sail on the ocean of life is our feelings; called Passion. It is Passion that fills our sails and moves us forward on the ocean of life. But there is also the one that mans the helm, the one that steers our course; the helmsman is called Reason. Reason mans our rudder and safely navigates us around hazardous reefs and any number of problems encountered on the ocean of life. Without Passion, our ship would flounder on the ocean of life and never really go anywhere, or more likely just be drawn out to deep seas on the current of life never really going where we want. But without Reason, Passion would fill our sails, and again we would loose control, and more than likely end up crashed on the reef! No, to sail our ship safely and effectively through the ocean of life we need both Passion to fill our sails and Reason to man the rudder.
Only then will our journey be a glorious one.
