Fight or flight?
I think just about everyone has heard about the “Fight or Flight response”. This is basically the act of survival, and is a very basic nature of the human condition. Basically, it states that when we are pushed into a corner, and especially when our survival is at stake… we will either fight or flee the situation in order to survive. A very basic, almost instinctual theory.
I would like to propose that we transcend this as an instinctual aspect of mankind, and bring it into our conscious awareness. How many times do you find yourself fleeing from something? Relationships? Hard choices or hard work? It’s so easy to run from that which causes us discomfort, and it has little to do with survival anymore. Sure running away from an axe murderer is one thing… running away from an uncomfortable situation is an entirely different matter. I think that if instead of running away from our discomfort, we moved toward that which inspires us (even if it’s uncomfortable) we will be far better off.
You’re not inspired? Well, you better get inspired soon. We all need to be moving toward something. If you’re not, just like any body of water that is not moving, you will grow stagnant and nothing will survive around you. So, make a conscious effort to fight every day. I’m not talking about causing conflict (unless you need to), but rather know where you want to go, and make those uneasy, or outright difficult choices… fight to get there.
I promise you'll be better off for it.
Bright blessings ~ Richard
