How many fingers do you see?

How many fingers do you see?

“ It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.” Henry David Thoreau said that when speaking of imagination, and of course it is very true. Have you ever held up two fingers, pointing at each other and nearly touching - and if you focus on the empty space between the two fingers all of a sudden you see a third finger floating between the two! There are no limits to our imagination (except those that we apply to it), and perhaps that is reason some scientists say there is no limit to our Universe.
“Whoa” you say, “how did you get from imagination (and a childhood experiment) to the limits of the Universe?!” It’s easy. It is from our thoughts, our dreams, and our imagination, that all things are created. Nothing in our universe (outside of nature) exists without it first belonging to the imagination of someone. There are those of the mind to say that even that in nature belongs to our collective creative force of imagination; that the Universe itself is defined by mankind’s imagination.
I don’t know how true that is, because as of yet I’ve not been able to dissolve those really big dark storm clouds, but I’m still working on it! None-the-less, the creation of the Universe is still beyond my creative forces. But who knows what a collective mind set could accomplish, right?
Let’s try practicing our imagination and Thoreau’s quote this week. With many of the things you “look at” try to “see” what it really is (or could be). Is that sales person behind the counter truly just being nice or are they really trying to make a move on you? Is that big dark fluffy cloud really a rain cloud, or is it just a big piece of cool shade that got stuck in the sky for a minute? Trust me – people might look at you strangely if you use your creative imagination, but your life could be much much fuller!
Dancing on rainbows will never go out of fashion, I’m sure of it.
