"History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme." Mark Twain said that and it seems to make a lot of sense to me. Someone else said that we are destined to make the same mistakes over and over if we don’t learn our lesson from those mistakes. Well, that’s probably true to, but the catch is, if Mark Twain is right, we don’t really repeat our mistakes we just come very close to them; we rhyme then trouble is brewing!
Since we are not repeating history, or our mistakes, we don’t always tend to see them coming. Even if we learned our lesson before we'd be screwed. So what do we do? We embrace this fact of life. Nothing is ever the same- not even history. We see this in our relationships all the time. “Ohhh he’s different, he’s got a good job" or “she’s much better, she's nothing like my mom”, but in the end it is the rhyme that gets us and everything ends in disaster, just like before, and we find ourselves slapping our forehead screaming, “NOT AGAIN!”.
But here’s the thing… rhymes are some of the first things we learn when we are learning to read, why? Because they are easy! Rhymes are easy, so we really should be able to see them coming. All we have to do is be aware of the rhyme, and we will almost prophesize the outcome! Many of our childhood rhymes are based in historic political satire. This was so that people could remember the joke. Dr. Suess is a beloved childrens author not because he was a Doctor, but because he made up silly rhymes. Rhymes are easy, and we don’t tend to forget them.
So, next time you think you learned your lesson, don’t forget to rhyme a little bit, just so you can see it coming.
