“‘Tis the Season …” As the holidays quickly approach us we are all thinking and reminded how ‘jolly’ we are supposed to be as we sing our carols, but for so many of us – nothing could be further from the truth. The holidays while for many is a time of magic, wonder, beauty and joy… for many others it is a time for depression, anxiety, bitterness and perhaps even suicide.
Why is that? Why do more people take their own lives during a time that is supposed to be dedicated to joy? Well, the answer, in part, is – Envy and of course Fear. We are envious of times past. A more peaceful time, a more joyous time and we fear that they will not return. Perhaps there is a memory of past loved one, and the holidays remind us of the joy that other brought into our lives; a joy now gone. Perhaps we are in trouble financially, and in our pride are fearful we cannot provide to those we love in a manner that is acceptable for the holidays.
But one Christmas carol comes to mind that perhaps can teach us something; “Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go. The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh …” To me this lovely little song says a lot. It tells me that our joy will face obstacles and fearful thing – “over the river and through the woods”. We have to traverse certain things to hit the gold; “Grandma’s house”. But the song further tells us… hey, don’t worry; “the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh”. To some it might be common sense, or a higher self or higher consciousness. It could be the Holy Spirit. I personally call it God. And God can lead us through the dark woods, where the aroma of freshly baked apple-cinnamon pies awaits us at Grandma’s house!
Trust that you will get past the river and woods, and you will.
