The River Knows
Let’s
take a minute to learn from ol’ man River.
You know me, I’ll learn from a rock if it will teach me. I think the river can teach us a great
deal. It moves along every day, never
looking or feeling the same way twice… it changes constantly. It seems never to take a direct route to
where it is going, but rather moves back and forth across the landscape in a
winding way.
But
these aspects of the River are not what I want to touch on today. I want to look at the rapids. The River does
not have “rapids”, naturally. It does
not choose to have rapids. Rapids are
the response to a number of situations that the River must choose to respond to.
If there were less large rock in the
River’s bed, then the rapids would be less.
If the water were deeper then the rapids would be less, if nonexistent. The River may even start to
find its way around the area of shallowness and rockiness in order to flow
smoothly again.
Does
your life feel like it is in the rapids right now? Take a lesson from the River. If you remove
the rocks the rapids will cease to be. If you flow
deeper – be less shallow the rapids will cease to be.
Lastly, of course you can always find a way around the rocks in your
path.
BUT
– if you choose to flow like the River chooses, flying over the rocks, banging
back and forth from shore to shore. If
you choose to thin yourself out so much that your shallows carry little else
but foam and air… be comforted that the rapids do not make the whole
river. Be comforted in your knowing that
after the rapids (even if there is a fall at the end) there is ALWAYS a
deep calmness.
Flow.
