“What do you do?” Go to any social gathering (party), and you’ll hear this question over and over again. It’s a good question. It’s a good way to start a conversation, and perhaps find out more about a person. More times than not, the answer to the question is what they do for a job, or a living; “I’m a banker”, or “I’m a home-maker”, or “I’m a mechanic”.
What a nice little box you’ve just put yourself into with such an answer (and I do mean “little” – very little). Richard Back wrote; “Argue for your limitations and sure enough they are yours.” I’m reasonably sure that you are far more than your ‘job’, yet that is where we derive so much value from. It is how the pecking order is constructed. But is your job TRULY what you are all about?
You are very lucky if your job is what you are all about. Most people merely exist doing their job, some even hate their job, and few of us really get to LIVE doing our job. When you think about your life’s purpose, which is to become the best ‘YOU’ you can become, what does your job have to do with that?
So the next time you are at a party, and someone asks what you do, take a moment to think about it. Wouldn’t it be great if you could say, “I’m a creative spirit. I create the world I live in, and that you see around me. I work at developing my soul, so that I may be one with both my creator and those other creators around me. What do you do?”
And when they respond to you with one eyebrow raised, “I’m a banker”, you can just nod – knowingly.
