“It’s easier to protect your feet with slippers than to carpet the whole of the earth”

Anthony deMello wrote that in One Minute Wisdom, and I certainly do agree with the truth in that statement. When we find ourselves banging our head on the wall what do we do? How long do we try to get others to change what they are doing, or change the environment around us before we go out and buy our own new slippers?!

In this life, change is one of the only things that can be counted on. Everything changes. The sooner we embrace that the sooner we will be able to rise to the occasion. When we are talking about change, the only change we can control is how we change ourselves. We certainly can try to change others, and sometimes we might be successful, but expect a battle. We might be able to change our environment – after all, it was us humans that buried the rivers under our cities, and tore down the mountains for the metals within them. But the control we have over our environment is an illusion. Mother Earth will always have the final say.

So, when change comes your way, (and you know it will) take the bull by the horns, and keep control by trying to see how you can adapt to the situation.

Life is an occasion – rise to it.
