“You don’t love me; you love the idea of me.” -
Have
you ever heard these words? Worse, have
you ever SAID them?! These words have
been made so popular by modern day literature.
You hear them all the time in movies, or read them in modern day romance
novels. I pray no one ever says those
words to you; they are very hurtful.
How condescending would that be anyway? What I want to know is what is the difference
between, “me” and “the idea of me”. Are
you trying to be someone else?
BINGO. If you ever hear those
words, you must face the fact that the other person probably was never being
true to themselves, and by default lying to you as well. The only reason any person would say those
words is to justify the guilt they are having for leaving you.
It happens all the time. We want to be loved so much by
another that we present to our beloved what we FEEL they want. Some of us are so
willing to sacrifice our very self and become someone else in order to be
loved. We keep up the façade as long as
possible. We wear the mask everyday,
hiding who we truly are, and in exchange we have “love”. Is it love, or just the idea of love? We wear the mask until that fateful day when
one of our shadow demons pops out and starts tearing away at our edges. Then one day, seemingly out of nowhere, our
partner says, “I don’t even know you anymore”.
When the truth of the matter is they never really knew you… and neither
did you.
I heard the perfect response to that line in the hit movie
“Freedom Writers”. The scene before the
divorce announcement goes something like…”you don’t love me, you love the idea
of me” he says… and her perfect response – “yeah, but it was a great
idea!”. Be true to yourself and everyone
else – THAT is the great idea!
