I know people that have said to me, “I’m not a pessimist, I’m a realist”. These people are believers in Murphy’s Law; “If something can go wrong … it will” because they would rather prepare for the worst and be pleased if they get something better.
There is another way however. W. Somerset Maugham said, “It’s a funny thing about life. If you refuse to accept anything but the very best, you very often get it.” Author Martin E.P. Seligman Ph.D. wrote in his wonderful book, Learned Optimism; “Our thoughts are not merely reactions to events; they change what ensues.” The energy that we give to the world is our choice. The interesting thing however, is what we think about, what we dream about, and what we put out to the world is what we will get back from the world.
It’s not impossible to look at life in a different way. Of course it can be difficult depending on what evils you have had to overcome (if you were able to overcome them). Some of us live in a state of being a victim and we allow these hurts to impact every aspect of our life. Take the girl that was tragically molested; it can understandably, be very difficult to overcome this hurt. If she cannot however, the chances of this girl growing to a woman that can have successful relationships with men will be slim indeed. It can even impact every area of her life were trust is needed.
When you wake up tomorrow I'd like you to try and think of two things said by two very different people. “If you can dream it, you can do it” (Walt Disney) and “In this life we cannot always do great things, but we can always do small things with great love” (Mother Teresa)
Dream your dreams, measure your steps, surely, but don’t neglect to take them out of fear. “To reach a port we must sail – sail not tie at anchor – sail not drift” (Franklin Roosevelt).
You’re a realist? Your life is only as real as you choose to make it.
