“What you see is what you get”
Nothing could be more true (and I’m not talking about from a technology perspective of WYSIWYG). Life is all about perception. How often have we heard that if you line up 5 different eye witnesses to a crime the police will get 5 different stories?
Shakespeare writes of this in a humorous fashion in his play, The Taming of the Shrew:
“PETRUCHIO: Come, let's continue on toward your father's house. Good Lord, how bright and splendid is the moon tonight!
KATHERINE: The moon? The sun! It is not moonlight now.
PETRUCHIO: I say it is the moon that shines so bright.
KATHERINE: I know it is the sun that shines so bright.
PETRUCHIO: Now, by my mother's son, and that's myself, It shall be moon, or star, or what I list …”
Clearly Petruchio was seeing one thing and poor Kate another. No wonder there was such a stir when the eclipse rolled around in ancient days!
My point is our life is made up of our perceptions. Our own personal awareness gives us one thing or another – the age old axiom of, “is your glass half full or half empty”. And it’s not just perspective from a philosophical point of view, but also from a very physical perspective.
Some people see the sun shining through the clouds, others see only the clouds. What do you choose to see?
