Thought of the day

There are many thoughts we have easily over 40,000 a day. I just want to add one more.

"Be the change ..."
Greenman Coaching ~ Thought of the Day

Be the Change

You’ve had a chance to look at 2009 and see what was “good” about it, and what was “bad”. In the end I hope you can know that it’s not about good and bad, but rather what served or did not serve you and your purpose. Even some of the “bad” things can serve your purpose. Anyway, with a little more perspective you’ve been able to create your wheel of life. If yours looks anything like mine it looks less of a wheel, and more like a flat tire! No wonder life is a bumpy ride!

The Wheel of Life is a great visual to help you see where you feel you need help. It is those areas that you need to focus on first. It does not mean that the other area’s are to be neglected. Every area of your life should have some goals. Write them down.

Some things you need to remember about goals are the following:

  • They need to be divided into (recognized as) long term or short term goals. - If it will take you more than six months to obtain it, I consider that a long term goal. The differences between long and short only come into play when thinking about your plan.
  • They need to be measurable – Set a deadline at least, and your plan should contain milestones.
  • They need to be attainable – The worst thing we do is set our sights too high, then once we see miss the mark, we tend to give up. Now there are those that say; “shoot for the stars, and if you miss you’re still likely to hit the moon!” Well, there is something to be said for that and if you can be positive enough to not obtain your original desire then fine, but for now we’re taking baby steps.
  • Once you define your “A” (where you are today) and your “B” (where you want to be tomorrow), then make your plan. Your plan is a series of things you are going to do to get from point A to B - your mini-goals if you will - your objectives. Make sure to include milestones in your plan. The more long term your goal is the more important milestones and follow ups are. Also, when you are thinking of your plan make sure you make note off all the things that you foresee as being obstacles. For example; Is your goal to loose weight? Do you have an irresistible desire for chocolate? Well… that would be an obstacle, and you should make a plan on how do deal with that obstacle.

This a quick down and dirty process. Forget about a New Years Resolution. They sound great, and maybe a New Years Affirmation is good… but if you want to make things happen, you need a road map. You wouldn’t take any other kind of journey without a map would you? Why not have a map for your journey through life?

Lastly I will recommend Debbie Ford’s wonderful little book, The best year of my life, (available through my website and Amazon.com).

2010 is being created right now as you read these words. You are creating it. Create the best 2010 you can think of. As Gandhi wrote; “Be the change you see in the world.”
