Take a “Quick Look” with Leopard

One of the new features of Leopard is an application called Quick Look. According to Apple, this application will allow users to preview “nearly every” file type. The application will only allow users to view the document so it should open much more quickly than a full application. Apple advertises this feature as useful for finding a document without having to open the full program that created it. While some users may find Quick Look helpful for this reason, good file naming practices would be much better.

The application will be useful, however, for opening files if the users does not own the full version of a program. For example, if someone sends data in an Excel spreadsheet for a Leopard users to review, it will not matter whether or not the user has Excel since he or she can view it using Quick Look. If fully integrated with Mail, the Mac OS e-mail client, it could also allow users to see attachments directly within Mail, much the same way that images are automatically displayed now. For these reasons, Quick Look may have users taking a long look at Leopard.
