Tip of the Week: Context Specific Menus

Throughout Windows the right mouse button is very useful for providing commands related to what is selected. When an item is right-clicked, a context specific menu appears. For example, in Microsoft Word, if you right click a misspelled word a menu will appear with several suggested correct spellings. Right clicking a file in Windows will bring up options related to the file such as print, rename and properties.

Context specific menus are also available on Macs. To “right-click” in Mac OS X, hold down the Control key while clicking an item. (If running a program in X11, hold down the Apple key instead.)

The context specific menus vary from program to program, so the best way to learn what is available is to start right-clicking!
