Now we are ready to look
at something pretty special.
It is a duck riding the ocean a hundred feet beyond the surf,
as he cuddles in the swells.
There is a big heaving in the Atlantic,
and he is part of it.
He can rest while the Atlantic heaves,
because he rests in the Atlantic.
Probably he doesn’t know
how large the ocean is.
And neither do you.
But he realizes it.
And what does he do, I ask you?
He sits down in it.
He reposes in the immediate
as if it were infinity- which it is.
That is religion, and the duck has it.
How about you?

"Home is where one starts from." T.S. Eliot

I was obsessed with The Wizard of Oz as a kid. I am now struck by the overwhelming message about the futility of seeking. If you think you have something more to gain, then the joke is on you: everything you always needed was always with you all along.

We see our beloved characters always had that which they were seeking. Throughout his quest for brains, the Scarecrow demonstrates his ability to strategize. The Tin Man is without a physical heart, but he is very sentimental and compassionate; and though the Lion says he has no courage, he is forever loyal and will risk everything for his friends.

As the wizard points out, the only difference is this crew doesn't have the badges by which society recognizes acheivement. (A diploma, a medal, etc).

How funny, we sometimes run all over seeking recognition for that which we already are and know. And what a relief to know that we don't have to wait to become something in the future. Life isn't scheduled to begin next week- this is it, right here and now. I don't have to travel afar for beauty, joy or peace. Everywhere I go is where the divine resides.

Surrender and Be at Peace

The other day the weather went beserk.  One minute, there was such golden sun and clouds huge and white- the next, the sky turned dark, the clouds black-ish violet and down came a monsoon.

The rain was fierce and it was really hard to drive, so we were happy to come to a traffic light.

To my right, there was a restaurant and people were running all over, trying to grab the tablecloths from the wind, cursing at the rain pouring in sideways. It was complete meyhem!

On the left side of the street, what do I see through this pounding rain? Sheep, sitting still as statues. They were all kneeling down, almost in a circle and sat in complete stillness, just blinking in the rain. No resistence to what the universe brought at that moment. Complete surrender to their Now.

Though I can't recapture this all in words, the brief experience of watching their beautiful quiet was so profound. I was drawn into their stillness and left simply marveling at water pouring out of the sky.

The rain stopped abruptly and to top it off, my Dad goes, "Watch, we'll probably see a rainbow now." So I quietly waited and searched the sky- and he was right! One of the biggest rainbows I've ever seen appeared!

I'm so glad I didn't miss these "ordinary" things. Life won't begin when the rain stops, or when I have more money or after I take that course on how to meditate and be present... Life is always happening right now, and is always calling for us to wake up and notice.

How many times have you heard the voice in your head resisting the present moment (Life itself) or trying to label Life? (This shouldn't be happening. He's good, but he's bad. We are right, they are wrong, etc.)

To live like this is to live in a constant state of conflict- you always need to be against something, anything, and you can no longer see what truly is. Not to mention, it is stressful to believe that you know how to make things run better than the universe itself!

There is a Sufi story about a farmer and his son. One day the farmer went out to feed his animals, and found his beloved horse lying on the ground, dead. The neighbors said, "We've heard of the awful news! It is terrible that you lost your only horse!" The farmer replied, "Maybe."

The next week, while the farmer was working the land, his son runs to tell him that he just captured a herd of wild horses. The neighbors say, "You are so lucky! You have been blessed with an entire herd of horses!" The farmer replied, "Maybe."

A few days later, while trying to tame the horses, the farmer's son was thrown to the ground and his leg was broken. The neighbors said, "What poor luck you are having, I am terribly sorry." The farmer's reply once again was, "Maybe."

Weeks go by, and the farmer's son is still lame. The emperor rounds up all the able-bodied boys in the nearby villages to fight in battle. When the messengers arrive at the farmer's house, they see that the farmer's son is injured so they pass him by. A few weeks later, the neighbors, who lost their sons in the battle, again come by the farmer's home and say, "You are so lucky to have your son home with you." Again the farmer replied, "Maybe."

Let us strive to go even two minutes without reducing everything life holds to flat labels. Let us have the courage to remember that we are part of something indescribably bigger and we can just Let Life Be. That is Peace.

What would we have to hold in compassion to be at peace right now? What would we have to let go of to be at peace right now? -Jack Kornfield

It’s become so ingrained in our society:  To be successful, you must go to college and then go to grad school or get a job.

Now, we see the trends changing as this time graduates are increasingly starting their own companies instead of going to work for other people's.
So obviously the next question is: Why wait till you graduate? Why not start a startup while you're in college? In fact, why go to college at all?  The landscapes in both education and business have changed drastically, even from when I graduated in 2003!

What advantages does a young twenty something have that a thirty something doesn’t in relation to creating a startup?

Endurance

The importance of stamina shouldn't be surprising. Startups= Long hours. You don’t hear about many successful startups whose founders worked only 9 to 5. And it's particularly necessary for younger founders to work long hours because they're probably not as efficient as they'll be later.

Less Baggage

Recent grads can live on practically nothing, and this gives you an edge over older founders, because the main cost in software startups is people. The people with kids and mortgages are at a real disadvantage. A 32 year old might be a better programmer, but probably also has a much more expensive life. A 25 year old has some work experience but can live as cheaply as an undergrad.

Because of their simpler lifestyle, a 20-something founder and can pack up and move anywhere, at anytime, ride the ups and downs. Pulling all nighters or living on ramen noodles and sharing an apartment does not phase them, and can be considered a great time.

Also, even if a 20-something does not possess a risky personality per se, they certainly aren’t as attached to the rules and paradigms older people have become accustomed to.  Sometimes ignorance is both bliss and invaluable.  You can maintain clarity and truly think creatively without being fearful of lack of stability.

I felt it, and many people I speak to still do feel a need to follow the college, job, grad school format.  That’s fine if you want to, but if you have a dream and you’re pretty young, don’t let anyone tell you there is some checklist you have to complete first.

When a great idea hits you, when is the best time to bring it to life?  Now!

Just because many of the above are commonplace these days, does not mean they are "normal." This is the great news: you don't have to suffer! What a relief it was to finally realize I was not doomed to be prisoner to this way of existence.

Who would you be without these feelings and behaviors? Happy, calm, accepting of others? More energetic, more productive, and enjoying positive relationships? That's pretty exciting!

Right now, if you can recognize any of the above signs in yourself, that is the first step. For now, just be present enough to observe these feelings and reactions- don't judge them, but acknowledge them. In Part 2, of this article, we will explore how we can very quickly leave this suffering behind and love this very moment.

"Karen holds the consciousness frequency of Presence with grace and gentleness, thus facilitating the emergence and growth of Presence within each participant. My love and blessings go to her and all the wonderful people attending her sessions.” — Eckhart Tolle

Karen McPhee first met Eckhart Tolle in 1998 after reading his book The Power of Now. The day they met, Karen realized her purpose in life: to support the flowering of human conciousness.

Karen worked with Eckhart privately and also volunteered as his assistant for a period of time. After this period of deepening in presence, Eckhart invited Karen to teach on his behalf. Since then, she has both facilitated large group events in the United States and Canada and provided individual support, helping others awaken and embody the divine.

Here on Karen's site, you can download some free guided meditations and take them with you anywhere. Karen's voice is very soothing and I truly find her guided meditations very impactful.

 GuruGirlz.com 24/7 Live Advice

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRLog (Press Release) – Mar 27, 2009 – New Jersey native and Manhattan resident Dana, 28, has launched GuruGirlz.com which allows people to talk to live advisors over the phone, day or night. The compassionate and objective advisors and life coaches of GuruGirlz.com lend guidance to a wide variety of issues including love and dating, stress and anxiety, career transition, motivation and self confidence.

“The era of having to make an appointment and sit in someone’s office for a certain amount of time is over,” states Dana, both GuruGirlz founder and top Life Advisor. “Now you can talk from wherever and whenever you need some support- even if it’s 2 in the morning!”

"Our job is to help you be your personal best. We believe you can live the happy, healthy, enriching life you deserve. I truly believe that positive human connection is the key to healing," continues Dana. "Sometimes, a conversation with another caring person can literally save you from the dangerous, compulsive, negative thoughts that are holding you back."

How It Works

Until now, getting advice or coaching was a time consuming and expensive challenge. GuruGirlz.com uses the call services powered by Ingenio, a subsidiary of AT&T. Users simply click on the advisor’s Call Now button and Ingenio will automatically connect the two parties for a live, anonymous call.

“The GuruGirlz advisors offer very affordable per minute rates and we always give free minutes after every call,” reports Dana. “It’s great because it gives our customers much more freedom. Instead of having to schedule say, an exact hour, clients can call and talk for as long as they like. A couple minutes, a couple hours- it’s up to you!”

Because Ingenio initiates the call to both parties, the privacy of customers is completely protected since no one’s name, email or any other information is revealed- not even on caller ID.

“In what sometimes seems to be a chaotic world, we work with you to achieve clarity, confidence and peace.”

Communication for Personal & Professional Success

As humans, we crave connection with others. Relationships exist, in a variety of capacities and intensity levels, to answer this need. However, developing and maintaining healthy interactions does not come naturally to many of us. Associations with acquaintances, work colleagues, friends, family, and intimate partners serve a variety of purposes. How you handle these exchanges will determine how well your needs are met. Therefore, the quality of your relationships is important to your overall health and happiness.

Learning how to nurture good relationships, communicate appropriately and manage conflict are examples of what will develop the connections you desire. The Advisors at GuruGirlz.com can assist your building strong, healthy relationships regardless of the context.

Eckhart Tolle writes in Stillness Speaks: "When you make the present moment the focal point of your attention — instead of using it as a means to an end — you go beyond the ego and beyond the unconscious compulsion to use people as a means to an end, the end being self-enhancement at the cost of others.

"When you give your fullest attention to whoever you are interacting with, you take past and future out of the relationship, except for practical matters. When you are fully present with everyone you meet, you relinquish the conceptual identity you made for them — your interpretation of who they are and what they did in the past — and are able to interact without the egoic movements of desire and fear. Attention, which is alert stillness, is the key.

"How wonderful to go beyond wanting and fearing in your relationships. Love does not want or fear anything."

One of the best ways to beat stress, gain clarity and come back to the present moment is to focus on your breathing and simple movements of the body. In this video, a Shaolin Temple disciple demonstrates some simple yet highly effective Qi Gong forms you can do anywhere- even at the office.

You dont have a life- You Are Life

Have you ever felt like you were just hanging on by the smallest thread? And then, within the turmoil, you see it: A glimmer, a feeling, a breath from the very universe itself...and you suddenly experience the truth that you are not an isolated human, but an integral part of a vastness impossible to express, and yet you know it with all your Being. Maybe it was a kind smile from a stranger, or the sound of a guitar; the glow of the sky at twilight or laughter shared with an old friend. I believe we are all here to teach and take care of eachother. Young, old; rich, poor; lighthearted, stoic- Our greatest teachers are the people we encounter everyday.

Theres no need to wait for the next moment

I would like to suggest a book: The Power of Now. Regardless of any circumstances a person might have, this book is relevant to every human being. A man who was once on the very brink of suicide, Tolle managed to shed the false ego and "pain body" material created by the mind. If we ever experience suffering, be it a bad mood or outright despair, we find that what is torturing us are only untrue, thought creations. However, the made up world of our thoughts and sad stories are not who we truly are. Beneath the compulsive creations of the brain, we are Life itself, a power which can't be broken.

I was walking yesterday, lost in the false identity of the fake voice in my head.  Feelings of anxiety and resentment were brewing. I was having a hard time coming back to the present moment when all of the sudden, I felt a resistence against my arm.  It was as if something was grabbing onto my coat sleeve, impeding me from moving my right arm.  I looked- didn't see anything.  I moved my arm again and felt the same sensation of something pulling back.  I looked again and saw it: A tiny string from my scarf was getting caught on my sleeve, becoming tense when I moved.  My first thought was, "How can such a tiny string impede a whole arm?"
And then I knew that string was no accident and the message was clear: The smallest disturbance, the least bit of resistence to what is, living in the past or future, can impede a person from living to their fullest, from living in the present moment.
I was reminded of the following story:

Two monks were walking down the street after a heavy rain that left the streets quite muddy. They came upon a a lady vainly attempting to find a dry path across the road without soiling her kimono.

One monk, more compassionate than the other, picked up the woman and carried her across the street, setting her down on the other side of the road. He returned to his companion and they continued down the road.  They continued for hours in silence until the second monk could no longer take it.  "Why did you carry that girl across the road? We are monks, we don't do things like that!"

The first monk said, "I put that girl down hours ago.  Are you still carrying her?"

But a few blocks later, my mind started reciting another made up monologue, reliving the past, trying to make up a future.  Again I felt the tugging at my arm.  The string had reattached itself.
I smiled and said, "Alight.  I'm here."
And this time I snapped the string and continued walking down 6th Avenue living in the Now.

"When you step into the Now, you step out of the content of your mind. The incessant stream of thinking slows down. Thoughts don't absob all your attention anymore, don't draw you in totally. Gaps arise in between thoughts- spaciousness, stillness. You begin to realize how much vaster and deeper you are than your thoughts." -Eckhart Tolle, Stillness Speaks.

Tolle's book, The Power of Now has made a great impact in my life and for many all over the world. The Buddhists seem to have long understood the importance and clarity of living in the Now.

"Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated that that. It is opening to or recieving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it." -Sylvia Boorstein
"At the moment of waking up, before getting out of bed,

get in touch with your breath, feel the various sensations in your body,

note any thoughts and feeling that maybe present, let mindfulness touch this moment,

Can you feel your breath? Can you perceive the dawning of each in breath?

Can you enjoy the feeling of the breath freely entering your body in this moment?

Breathe in I smile, breathe out I calm my body, dwelling in the present moment, it is a wonderful moment." - Thich Nhat Hanh
