Gary Gromet   OPTIMUM FITNESS TIPS
I am an accomplished endurance athlete, 57 years old, and live in Miami, Florida, happily married to Kirsten Lisbeth Jensen. I have been the owner of Discount Health Foods for over since March 1992. www.discounthealthfoods.net In 1985, when I was 40 years old, I realized that I was a fat old man and needed to do something about it. I started running and walking, eventually running 5 miles in 49:50 in Sept 1986. By Labor Day 1993, I finished the Huntsville Double Iron in about 28 1/2 hours, and went back in 1994 to do it in 24:55. The Huntsville Double Iron was an endurance race consisting of a 4.8 mile swim, a 224 mile bike and a 52.4 mile run. While completing the 1995 Ironman World Championship Triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, I hurt my back so badly that it took me 4 years of training to rehabilitate it. Unfortunately, the back still failed to perform adequately in the Panama City Ironman in 1999. Finishing the swim and bike portions well under 7 hours, I had back pains on the second half of the marathon. My split time for the second half was almost twice as long as the first half. The time of 12:28 reflected a back that still needed work. My efforts continue through the present in that he does long bike rides, marathon running races and weight training. Kirsten and I have purchased a Tetra Tetra tandem bicycle by Calfee-Designs. Being endurance athletes, a "Dream Goal" is to complete the Race Across America (RAAM) on their Calfee Tetra Tetra. Standing in the way is the biggest obstacle to reaching the Dream Goal: SADDLE SORES. My typical training week is a daily commute to work of 20 miles each way. Fast pack rides on Saturday and Sunday of between 60 and 120 miles. An average week has about 300 miles of cycling and one day of resistance training. My favorite fuel source to replenish his body during long events is Cytomax and GU, but after 11 hours something more substantial: my wife's whole wheat bread, bananas, strawberries, and sports bars such as Kashi bars. As the event goes on more and more solid food. The most valued person in his life is his wife. My favorite quote or words to live by: Know your current limitations and train your body and mind to exceed them. What I'd like to say to athletes and/or a news reporter: The foundation of excellent health stands on three controlling stanchions: 1. what we put into our bodies as food, supplements and drugs; 2. What we do with our bodies as exercise and rest; 3. What we do with our minds.
