HDTV Buying Advice
|
 |
Buying a television used to be one of the most straightforward purchases possible. If your TV needed to be replaced, you just hopped in the car, headed down to Sears and took home the biggest, brightest bad boy compatible with your budget. Within an hour or two, you were back in business.
But things have changed significantly in a relatively short period of time. The CRT-based "tube" TV that many of us grew up with will soon find itself to be a bit player in a "Life in the 20th Century" museum exhibit. Like every other aspect of modern life, TVs have gone digital and our programming is now delivered in something called "high definition." New technologies such as plasma, LCD, DLP and LCoS are the just a few of the "buzzwords" you're going to hear when you set foot on the display floor at your local consumer electronics dealer.
But deciding which TV to buy is just the tip of the iceberg. It's possible that you're going to need to upgrade your satellite or cable TV system. Or maybe you'd like to go for the total home theater experience and add a surround sound audio system to replicate that moviehouse experience.
And while you probably know all about DVDs, did you know that even the familiar silver discs are getting a "high definition" upgrade, with two competing -- and incompatible formats -- HD DVD and Blu-ray. If you're thinking "VHS vs Betamax," you might be right.
There are plenty of other challenges to consider, too, but that's enough for now. Just reading about all these changes and new choices is enough to cause some potential buyers to go into full-scale retreat mode.
The Video Savant service is designed to provide you with the basic information you need to make a worry-free and hassle-free HDTV purchase. We can cover the basics, but are also ready to discuss more in-depth issues, including helping you to weigh up the pros and cons of your short list.
