Beyond Top40: disover bands not heard on the radio
A lot of people say how tired they are of the radio. Whether you're sick of Puff Daddy or Britney Spears specifically, or wonder why "reggae" invariably means Bob Marley, there is indeed a whole big world of music out there for you to uncover.
The biggest obstacle to finding great acts who aren't in Gap ads is the Recording Industry and the marketing machines that shove N'Sync and other MTV clones down your throat. They want you to buy their music, so they keep 'independent' artists off the airwaves.
Since 1997, I've been working as a merchandiser and producer for music retailers. Before that, I was involved in 'College Radio' and have been in a music-rich environment for decades.
I can offer you advice on most English-language genres. This can mean shopping tips for finding all-girl "indie rock," alternatives to mainstream hip-hop, or critiques of the music industry and advice on how to get around obstacles to finding bands who play your type of music.
You might call me if you have questions such as the following:
"My son wears very large pants and says he is into Old School hip-hop. I thought what he listens to was Rap music. Please explain."
"I love grunge but I am sick of my Pearl Jam collection...who else is worth checking out?"
"Which is more dead, Tupac Shakur or Trance techno?"

"Who covered Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine," OR "Who did UB40 rip off Red Red Wine from?"
In all honesty, I'm not so well versed in Country/Western or Classical music, but if I can help, I'll give it a shot
