Is your life being controlled by some form of addiction? Whether it's food, alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, shopping, or your job - if you are spending too much time involved with these activities, it can be very destructive. How do you know if it is an addiction or if it is healthy behavior? The answer is simple, if you find yourself engaging in any of these activities or substances on a frequent basis and it is having an impact on other areas of your life, quite possibly it has become a dependency for you. Ponder this idea. What thoughts were going through your head and what emotions were you feeling before you took that drink or spent all that money? Were you in a good mood or feeling angry, sad or stressed? How did you feel afterwards? Were you feeling a temporary high, than crashing after with feelings of resentment, shame or guilt? If you were doing something in moderation and it has not become problematic in your life , then you are probably okay, but if this is influencing your health and relationships, then you need to take a long hard look at it.
They say that addicts will not come to surrendering to their problem until they have hit their 'rock bottom', sometimes this is the case, but sometimes rock bottom is too late.
The first step is admitting that a problem exists. The next step is what to do about it. There are numerous solutions to these situations and it varies for everyone. Some people have the ability to change a behavior quickly by just quitting cold turkey without any support, where others may have what's called an 'addictive personality' and may be predisposed to addiction through genetics or childhood experiences. These people may require support from a trained therapist, coach, counsellor, support group, treatment center.
These professionals will teach you how to master your negative thought patterns, how to connect with your emotions and substitute your addictions for more positive habits. They will teach you how to set goals for yourself and how to a healthier lifestyle and balance your life and learn to recover one day at a time.
I am a certified coach/counsellor with 10 years experience helping people with addictions, mental illness, trauma and abuse, relationship problems. Give me a call and let's get started today on getting your life back on track.
